Hunger and Poverty in Wichita
20,365 Wichita children live in poverty.
Wichitas childhood poverty rate is 21.8%—higher than national average of 17.3%.
Hunger and Poverty in Kansas
300,000 Kansans cannot afford enough food to feed their families. They either go hungry or require help from food pantries.
85,000 Kansas children use food stamps in order to have enough to eat.
12.3% of Kansas households are food insecure. This rate has gone up each year since 2000.
4.8% of Kansas families are hungry. This is a 50% increase from 1999-2001, making Kansas the seventh hungriest state in the nation.
Hunger and Poverty Affect Working Families
58% of Kansas families who are food insecure or at risk of hunger have at least one full-time worker. An additional 13% of families have at least one part-time worker.
Hunger and Poverty Are Increasing
As measured by free and reduced lunches, childhood poverty has increased each year for the past three years, both in Wichita and across Kansas.
